The
Department of Anatomical & Cellular Pathology combines teaching,
research and laboratory service at the Prince of Wales Hospital, a 1,400-bed
teaching hospital of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Department
consists of three service units: Anatomical Pathology (including cytology),
Laboratory Hematology (including Blood Bank) and Bone Marrow Transplant
Laboratory. It is the main service department for the New Territory
East (NTE) of Hong Kong, serving a population of over 1 million. In
Anatomical Pathology, the annual accessions are: 30,000 sugicals, 30,000
cytology and about 120 autopsies.
Both
clinical and basic research on human diseases are carried out, Research
is conducted using state-of-the-art techniques in histology, immunohistology,
morphometry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, molecular genetics,
cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics. Regular clinicopathologic and
research meetings are held. Emphasis is on collaborative research with
other clinical departments, basic science departments and overseas centers
of execellence and research questions are studied by a multidisciplinary
approach. Researchers include research scientists, graduate students
and visiting fellows from overseas and mainland China.
